Mystery Quilt

Welcome to the Mystery Quilt, a block of the month quilt, all designed by Sheila Christensen and colour way options selected by myself, Lisa.

A selection of past Large Mystery Quilts

What is Mystery Quilt?

Quite simply it is a bi-annual quilt released as a block of the month club run over 10 months, where the only decision you have to make prior to starting is your fabric choices and finished quilt size. The rest is actually a surprise!

What Makes this Mystery Quilt Different?

This Mystery Quilt comes to you all Pre-Cut.

Yes, that is right, every piece is die cut ready to sew.

Sheila uses all simple shapes of triangles, squares and oblongs to create her designs, making sewing very simple.

How Does a Mystery Quilt Run?

There are two launches of Mystery Quilt a year, starting in February and July.

Each month you will receive a parcel containing simple block instructions and all the pre-cut fabric pieces required for those blocks.

On the tenth month the Mystery is solved and you receive your final package including the big reveal and directions on constructing your Mystery Quilt top.

All the pieces within the Mystery Quilt are simple shapes, of triangles, squares, oblongs and strips. Yes you did read correctly before they are already cut for you just to start sewing.

Mystery Quilt Options

Each Mystery Quilt release comes with a variety of colourway choices, sometimes between five to eight choices.

The quilt is also offered in two sizes:

  • Small quilt top – 48″ x 60″
  • Large quilt top – 72″ x 72″

The Small Mystery Quilt is 48″ x 60″.

This example here was from Village Green and the colourway was called Crocus.

Compare this to the same quilt option below in the large version.

Here is the same Mystery Quilt colourway option but in the Large size of 72″ x 72″.

You can see that the centre elements of the quilt are the same but to allow for the difference between the rectangle and square quilt sizes the border elements change slightly between the two.

The final choice to make is whether you want to pay in full or by subscription payment.

Who is Mystery Quilt for?

Bottom line, Mystery Quilt is perfect for everyone.

If you are a complete beginner, perfect. You do not have to worry about all the precision around cutting pieces leading to accurate patchwork. You do not need to invest in all the quilting equipment; cutting mat, rotary cutter, rulers etc. You simply need access to a sewing machine and an iron for pressing.

Are you more of an experienced quilter, also perfect. The BOM makes for very simple and relaxed sewing.

If you are deprived of time, maybe working full time, looking after family, generally have a busy life, then squeezing in sewing time can sometimes be a challenge.

These monthly blocks are nice to just be able to sit and sew. You don’t have to make any decision about which fabrics to use, where the fabrics should be placed and then do all the prepping. You simply open up your little green box and sit down and sew.

How Do You Join?

Each live Mystery Quilt is released in December and May for starting in February and July respectively. Giving you a two month window to make your decisions on colourways, size and payment options prior to the BOM starting.

You can look at the most recent quilt released using the link above.

What about if you are a little nervous about taking part in a true MYSTERY QUILT? Well I have a full back catalogue of previous kits available for you to buy.

The beauty of this, you can see what the finished design looks like and choose based on that. It will still be packaged and delivered in the same way as a live Mystery Quilt but you can choose based on what the quilt looks like. See your current options here…

If you are totally new to patchwork and would like a smaller project to work on, maybe you would like to try one of my cushion kits based on the same principal as a Mystery Quilt Clue, but this is just one bigger block with a kit to make it into a full cushion cover kit.
